This owned official first day cover bears the 5½p and 7p new values in the Isle of Man pictorial definitive series, issued on 28 May 1975 and catalogued as SG22 and SG24.[1]

The owned cover

The envelope has the crowned Isle of Man Post Office Authority emblem and crossed posthorns, with “DEFINITIVE ISSUE / NEW VALUES” and “OFFICIAL FIRST DAY COVER” inscriptions. It is addressed and carries a blue bilingual airmail label. The recipient’s details are not transcribed here. The 5½p stamp is to the left of the 7p stamp, and both are tied by a circular Douglas first-day cancellation dated 28 May 1975.[2]

The envelope reverse is blank. The information card is held with the cover and is printed on one side only.[2]

Stamp production

These denominations extended the pictorial definitive series introduced in 1973. Both stamps are inscribed “1975”. Courvoisier printed them by photogravure on granite paper, perforated 11½, in sheets of 50 (5 × 10). The catalogue records printing (g) with matt, almost invisible gum.[1]

The information card accompanying the owned official cover credits the artwork to J. H. Nicholson, R.I. It records photogravure printing by Courvoisiers of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in five colours, with sheets of 50 arranged as ten rows of five. It describes white paper with coloured ink fibres and special gumming for tropical climates. Stamp size including perforation is printed as 25.7 × 41.1 mm, horizontal.[3]

For the 5½p Douglas Promenade design, the card identifies the Pier Terminal buildings, a horse tram and Douglas Head in the background. For the 7p Laxey design, it describes the large water wheel used to pump water from the mines.[3]

Withdrawal

General withdrawal from sale was on 31 December 1978. This is a stamp-sales withdrawal date; the cited entry does not supply a postal-invalidation date or a withdrawal-from-sale date for this cover.[1]

The stamp images in the table and the cancellation detail were scanned from this owned official cover.
