This owned official first day cover bears the 11p and 13p new values of the Isle of Man pictorial definitives, issued on 29 October 1975 and catalogued as SG29 and SG30.[1]

Owned official cover

The addressed envelope has the crowned Isle of Man Post Office Authority emblem and crossed posthorns, with “DEFINITIVE ISSUE / NEW VALUES” and “OFFICIAL FIRST DAY COVER” inscriptions. The recipient’s name and address are not transcribed here. The 11p Monk’s Bridge stamp is on the left and the 13p Derbyhaven stamp on the right, both tied by a circular Douglas first-day cancellation dated 29 October 1975.[2]

The envelope reverse is blank, and the accompanying information card is printed on one side only.[2]

Stamp production

These denominations extended the pictorial definitive series introduced in 1973. Both are inscribed “1975”. The catalogue records photogravure printing on unwatermarked granite paper, perforation 11½, sheets of 50 (5 × 10) and printing (i) with thick shiny gum.[1]

The information card held with the owned official cover credits the artwork to J. H. Nicholson, R.I. It records photogravure printing by Courvoisiers of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in five colours. The paper is described as white paper with coloured ink fibres and special gumming for tropical climates. Stamp size including perforation is printed as 25.7 × 41.1 mm, horizontal. Sheets contain 50 stamps, arranged as five stamps per row and ten rows.[3]

For the 11p design, the card identifies Monk’s Bridge at Ballasalla, outside the precincts of Rushen Abbey, as a stone bridge of three arches spanning the River Silverburn. For the 13p design, it describes Derbyhaven as a natural harbour north of Castletown, sheltered by the mainland and the Langness peninsula.[3]

Withdrawal

General withdrawal from sale was on 31 December 1978. This is a stamp-sales withdrawal date; the cited entry does not supply a postal-invalidation date or a date when this cover ceased to be sold.[1]

The stamp illustrations and cancellation detail were scanned from this owned official cover.
