MediaWiki controls access to wiki features through user groups and individual rights.
Every visitor or registered account belongs to one or more groups. Each group has a collection of permissions, such as the ability to edit pages, upload files, delete pages or change user rights.
The current permissions assigned to every group can be viewed at User-group rights.
Main user groups
- Visitors
- People who are viewing PhantomWiki without signing in. They may read publicly accessible pages but cannot edit the wiki.
- Users
- Registered accounts. All registered accounts automatically belong to this group.
- Autoconfirmed users
- Registered accounts which have automatically met the configured account-age and edit-count requirements.
- Administrators
- Users with access to page deletion, protection, blocking and other maintenance tools.
- Interface administrators
- Users permitted to edit site-wide CSS, JavaScript and JSON interface pages.
- Bureaucrats
- Users permitted to assign and remove certain user-group memberships.
- Bots
- Automated accounts used for approved repetitive tasks.
- Suppressors
- Users who can hide sensitive revision and log information from ordinary users and administrators.
- Push subscription managers
- Users permitted to manage push-notification subscriptions.
Viewing group membership
The following special pages provide information about accounts and groups:
- Registered users and group membership
- Rights assigned to each group
- User-rights management
- Recently active users
Only users with the required permissions can change another account’s group memberships.
Automatic groups
Some groups are assigned automatically rather than manually.
These include:
- visitors who are not signed in;
- all registered users;
- autoconfirmed users.
Automatic group membership depends on the visitor’s login status or the registered account meeting the configured requirements.
PhantomWiki access policy
PhantomWiki is publicly readable but is intended to be edited and administered only by PhantomSteve.
User rights should only be expanded where they are required for a specific wiki-management function.
