SG56 is the 8p stamp from the Isle of Man's Birth Centenary of Sir Winston Churchill issue, released on 22 November 1974. It depicts Churchill and a Manx anti-aircraft gun crew.[1]
Design and production
G. Kneale designed the stamp. Courvoisier printed it by photogravure on granite paper. It is multicoloured and perforated 11½. Sheets contain 25 stamps, arranged in five columns and five rows.[1]
The design also appears in IM-SG-MS58, the four-stamp miniature sheet issued with the set.[1]
Sales and withdrawal
Stanley Gibbons records a quantity sold of 424,691 for the 8p stamp and withdrawal from sale on 21 November 1975. The miniature sheet has a separate catalogue sales figure.[1]
First day covers
A first day cover is listed in the catalogue. The associated cover records include Official, Mercury and Cotswold covers bearing either the four separate stamps or the miniature sheet, and a Fleetwood cover bearing SG56 alone.[1]

The information leaflet accompanying the owned official miniature sheet cover gives the designer’s full credit as G. V. H. Kneale and names the printer as Helio Courvoisier. It specifies photogravure, an individual stamp size of 29 × 48.2 mm including perforations, and white paper with coloured silk fibres and special gumming for tropical climates. The separately issued stamps use 105 g/m² paper: four colours for the 3½p and 4½p values, and three for the 8p and 20p values. The miniature sheet uses 120 g/m² paper and seven colours, with dimensions of 120.5 × 91 mm.[2]
