SG 5 is the 4d olive-sepia Isle of Man regional definitive depicting Queen Elizabeth II, issued on 4 September 1968.[1]
The illustrated example is the cancelled stamp on the collection’s shield-cachet first day cover, bearing a Douglas first day of issue handstamp dated 4 September 1968.
The stamp has one centre phosphor band. Cylinder number 1 is recorded. It was issued on the same date as the 5d royal blue stamp, IM-SG-7, and the catalogue lists a first day cover containing both denominations.[1]
The design is credited to John Hobson Nicholson, with the portrait credited to Dorothy Wilding Ltd.. The stamps were printed by Harrison and Sons using photogravure.[1]
The stamp is printed on chalk-surfaced paper without a watermark and is perforated 15 × 14. The sheet format is 240 stamps (12 × 20).[1]
The catalogue records withdrawal of the 4d denomination locally on 14 March 1971 and at British Philatelic Counters on 25 November 1971. The stamp ceased to be valid for postage on 1 March 1972, under the catalogue’s invalidation statement for Isle of Man SG 1–7.[1]
