This €0.26 Maltese commemorative stamp depicts the cruise ship Riviera in Grand Harbour, with the Malta Siege Bell Memorial in the foreground. It was issued as one of three stamps marking European Maritime Day in 2013.[1][2]
The Malta Siege Bell Memorial was inaugurated on 29 May 1992 overlooking Grand Harbour. It was sculpted by Michael Sandle and commemorates more than 7,000 civilians and service personnel who died during the siege of Malta.[3]
The stamp was later used with the Isle of Man stamp depicting the same memorial on a signed joint commemorative cover marking the 80th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta. MaltaPost issued a special commemorative handstamp for the anniversary on 18 April 2022.[4]
The identification as Stanley Gibbons 1838 and Scott 1488 is presently based on secondary listings. The Stanley Lisica price list states that its SG numbers were taken from the Commonwealth Stamp Catalogue, with updates from Gibbons Stamp Monthly, while its Scott numbers were taken from the 2017 Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue with subsequent new-issue updates.[5] The catalogue numbers should remain marked as unverified until checked directly against the relevant catalogues.
