This issue presents six animal paintings by Manx visual artist Eileen Schaer. The animals appear either alone or alongside human figures in imaginative, dreamlike settings characteristic of Schaer’s distinctive artistic style.[1]

Schaer was born in Liverpool in 1948, began painting in 1970 and moved to the Isle of Man in 1975. She is self-taught and has worked in media including gouache, oil, acrylic, painted sculpture and linocut. She and her late husband, artist and teacher David Fletcher, supported and encouraged generations of young Manx artists and students.[2]

The six stamp designs reproduce acrylic paintings on board, with parts of the imagery extending over the raised frame of each original work. The paintings combine animals, people, vegetation and imaginary landscapes. Schaer has described animals as loyal companions and guardians and has said that her work is intended to be uplifting and joyful.[1]

Schaer’s work has been described as having both a sophisticated and a childlike primitive quality. Her dreamlike compositions frequently depict animals and people coexisting peacefully in scenes which may be interpreted in different ways.[3]

The stamps were designed by IOM Advertising & PR and printed by Cartor using four-colour offset lithography. They measure 42 × 28 mm, are perforated 13 per 2 cm and were printed on 110 gsm PVA-gummed paper in sheets of 15. The official first day cover was limited to 1,500 copies.

The reverse of the cover contains a biography of Eileen Schaer and a portrait of the artist by Patricia Griffiths. The cover cachet reproduces Schaer’s gouache Lady Reclining on a Crocodile.

The identifiers P2751–P2756 are provisional PhantomWiki numbers. They preserve the expected Stanley Gibbons sequence but have not been published or confirmed by Stanley Gibbons.
