This cover belongs to the Landmarks and Queen Elizabeth II definitive series, issued in stages: ½p–16p on 28 February 1978, 20p–£1 on 18 October 1978, and £2 on 29 September 1981.[1]

Illustrated cover

This wanted reference bears 25p, 20p, 50p, £1 (left to right, reading the rows from top to bottom). Its circular Douglas first-day cancellation is dated 18 October 1978. The example is addressed.[2]

Subjects and production

25p — The official sheet describes the tailless Manx cat, drawing attention to its relatively long hind legs and characteristic stance.[3]

20p — The official sheet describes the fuchsia hedges found along Manx roads and notes that two bees are included in the design.[3]

50p — The sheet describes the chough’s coastal habitat and breeding on the Calf of Man bird sanctuary. It records the species under the short design label Chough; the collector’s catalogue identifies the red-billed chough.[3]

£1 — The official sheet links the Viking warrior to Norse settlement on the island and the tradition of Tynwald. It relates the design to the forthcoming 1979 millennium celebrations.[3]

The official sheet credits J. H. Nicholson, R.I., P.S., and Helio Courvoisier SA. It specifies photogravure, five colours, 28 × 33.4 mm stamps, and white paper with brownish-greenish silk threads and special gumming for a tropical climate. It gives the paper weight as “105 gr”. The catalogue calls this granite paper. The sheet does not explicitly state a watermark status.[3][1]

The catalogue gives perforation 11½.[1] The information sheet gives 11¼ × 11¼.[3] SG normally reports perforations to the nearest half and uses the Instanta gauge as its standard. These source readings are retained separately; their difference alone does not establish an additional catalogue variety.[4]
