SG69 is the 10p stamp in the Isle of Man 50th Death Anniversary of Sir George Goldie issue, released on 9 September 1975.[1]

Design

The vertical design shows Goldie in evening dress with the Royal Geographical Society’s emblem. The stamp identifies his presidency as 1905–08. The information sheet records that he joined the Society in 1877, served on its Council from 1891 and was President from 1905 to 1908.[2]

The illustration is a cancelled detail from the collector’s Isle of Man – 50th Death Anniversary of Sir George Goldie – Official cover – 1975.[3]

Production

The catalogue credits G. Kneale as designer and Courvoisier as printer. It describes multicoloured stamps printed by photogravure on granite paper.[1]

The official information sheet supplies the fuller names G. V. H. Kneale and Helio Courvoisier. It specifies four colours for the 5½p and 12p values, and five for the 7p and 10p values. Its paper description is official white paper with coloured silk fibres and special gumming for tropical climates. Stamp size is printed as 25.73 × 35.96 mm; this order is retained without assigning width and height labels to the differently oriented designs.[2]

The catalogue records sheets of 50, arranged 10 × 5 for the 7p and 10p stamps and 5 × 10 for the other two values. The information sheet confirms sheets of 50.[1][2]

This denomination uses 5 colours and sheets of 50 arranged 10 × 5.[2][1]

Perforation discrepancy

The catalogue gives perforation 11½. The official information sheet prints 11½ × 11¾. Both source descriptions are recorded; the difference has not been resolved by measuring these stamps.[1][2]

Sales and withdrawal

The catalogue records 373,771 stamps sold for this denomination, with withdrawal from sale on 8 September 1976. These are stamp-sales figures and dates, not first day cover sales or postal-invalidation information.[1]
