IM-SG-48 is the 8p stamp from the Isle of Man’s Tourist Trophy Motorcycle Races (1st issue), issued on 29 May 1974. The catalogue describes its subject as Max Deubel and Emil Horner, 1961.[1]

Subject and design

The design combines Deubel’s portrait and facsimile signature with a racing scene showing Deubel and passenger Emil Horner on a BMW sidecar machine. The inscription identifies the machine as the 1961 500 cc Sidecar winner. The information card records the pair’s victories in that class in 1961, 1964 and 1965.[2]

Design and production

The stamp was designed by J. H. Nicholson, R.I., and printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Ltd. The catalogue describes the process as lithography, the colours as multicoloured and the perforation as 13 × 13½.[1]

The information card describes the process as Delacryl and specifies six colours, a stamp size of 46 × 31.5 mm and white gummed paper, code TR4. Gum composition is not specified.[2]

Sheets contained 50 stamps, comprising two panes of 25 arranged 5 × 5. The imprint is in the right-hand corner of the bottom margin.[1]

Plate numbers

The catalogue records 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D, each ×6. It also records these additional combinations for the 8p value:

  • 1A–1A–2A–1A (×3)
  • 1B–1B–2B–1B (×3)
  • 1C–1C–2C–1C (×3)
  • 1D–1D–2D–1D (×3).[1]

No particular plate combination has been identified for the illustrated stamp.

Sales and withdrawal

Stanley Gibbons records 334,760 stamps sold. The stamp was withdrawn from sale on 28 May 1975.[1]

First day cover

Stanley Gibbons lists a first day cover for the issue.[1] The illustrated stamp is on the owned cover recorded at Isle of Man – Tourist Trophy Motorcycle Races (1st issue) – 1974.

The catalogue also cross-refers to the later Tourist Trophy issue: SG 63, SG 64, SG 65 and SG 66.[1]
