This 11p stamp was issued on 19 October 1977 as part of the bicentenary of the first visit of John Wesley issue.[1]
Subject
The 11p depicts John Wesley preaching outside Braddan Church. The information sheet says that the design is based on an oil painting; no artist for that painting is identified in the supplied leaflet.[2]
Production details
The official information sheet credits Helio Courvoisier SA as both designer and printer. It specifies photogravure, four colours for each design, and official white paper containing coloured silk fibres, with special gumming for a tropical climate and a weight of 105 g/m². The catalogue describes this as granite paper.[2][1]
The leaflet gives this stamp’s dimensions as 28 × 44.1 mm. The stamps were issued in sheets of 50, arranged 5 × 10 according to the catalogue.[2][1]
The catalogue lists perforation 11½.[1] Its general convention is to report perforations normally to the nearest half, using the Instanta gauge as its standard.[3] The information sheet gives the more detailed figures 11¼ × 11¼ for the 6p and 13p, and 11¼ × 11¾ for the 7p and 11p.[2] The two source descriptions are retained; the difference alone does not establish a separately catalogued perforation variety.
Sales and withdrawal
The catalogue records 373,805 sold of this stamp. It was withdrawn from sale on 18 October 1978.[1]
