SG63 is the 5½p stamp in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Motorcycle Races (2nd issue) issue, released on 28 May 1975. It depicts Tom Sheard, 1923.[1]
Design
The design combines a portrait of Tom Sheard with a racing motorcycle and the year 1923.
The official sheet relates the 5½p subject to Sheard’s 1923 Senior TT victory on a Douglas motorcycle.[2]
The stamp identifies Sheard with a 4.97 h.p. Douglas motorcycle and his 1923 Senior TT victory.[3]
Production
The catalogue credits J. Nicholson as designer and John Waddington as printer. It describes multicoloured lithographed stamps, perforated 13½, in sheets of 50 comprising two panes of 25 (5 × 5), with the imprint in the right-hand corner of the bottom margin.[1]
The accompanying information sheet gives the fuller credits J. H. Nicholson, R.I., P.S., and John Waddington of Kirkstall Ltd. It confirms lithography, five colours and sheets of 50 in two panes of 25. Its paper specification is 102 g/m² Litho-cromo 56b adhesive stamp paper. The printed stamp dimensions, 1.1 × 1.75 inches, convert to approximately 27.9 × 44.5 mm; the order follows the card and is not labelled width × height.[2]
The information sheet prints the perforation as 14, whereas the catalogue gives 13½. This discrepancy is retained explicitly; the card’s figure has not been substituted for the catalogue entry.[2][1]
The catalogue records “1A, 1B, 1C, 1D (each ×5); 10p. 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D (each ×5)”. The separate 10p entry repeats the same plate numbers and multiplicity. These are issue production details, not plate markings identified on the illustrated covers.[1]
Sales and withdrawal
The catalogue records 633,250 stamps sold for this denomination. Withdrawal from sale was on 27 May 1976. This is a stamp-sales quantity and withdrawal date, not a first day cover sales record or postal-invalidation date.[1]
