SG55 is the 4½p stamp from the Isle of Man's Birth Centenary of Sir Winston Churchill issue, released on 22 November 1974. It depicts Churchill and Government Buildings, Douglas.[1]

Design and production

G. Kneale designed the stamp. Courvoisier printed it by photogravure on granite paper. It is multicoloured and perforated 11½. Sheets contain 25 stamps, arranged in five columns and five rows.[1]

The design also appears in IM-SG-MS58, the four-stamp miniature sheet issued with the set.[1]

Sales and withdrawal

Stanley Gibbons records a quantity sold of 853,357 for the 4½p stamp and withdrawal from sale on 21 November 1975. The miniature sheet has a separate catalogue sales figure.[1]

First day covers

A first day cover is listed in the catalogue. The associated cover records include Official, Mercury and Cotswold covers bearing either the four separate stamps or the miniature sheet, and a Fleetwood cover bearing SG55 alone.[1]
