IM-SG-35 is the 2½p stamp in the Isle of Man's Centenary of Steam Railway issue, released on 4 August 1973. Its design depicts No. 1 Sutherland, dated 1873 in the catalogue description.[1]

Locomotive

The accompanying information card describes Sutherland as a 2-4-0 side-tank locomotive built by Beyer, Peacock & Company in 1873. It was named after the Duke of Sutherland, chairman of the Isle of Man Railway Company at the railway's opening.[2]

The card records that Sutherland hauled the official opening train from Douglas to Peel on 1 July 1873.[2]

Design and production

The stamp was designed by J. H. Nicholson, R.I., and printed by Harrison & Sons (High Wycombe) Ltd. using photogravure. The information card records five colours, white postage stamp paper with Harrison & Sons coating, and PVA adhesive.[2]

Perforation is 15 × 14. Stanley Gibbons records sheets of 50 (5 × 10) and cylinder numbers 1A (each ×5).[1]

Sales and withdrawal

Stanley Gibbons records a quantity sold of 617,122 stamps. The stamp was withdrawn from sale on 3 August 1974.[1]

The illustrated stamp is on the owned official cover, cancelled at Douglas on 4 August 1973.
