SG 9 is the 3p ultramarine Isle of Man regional definitive depicting Queen Elizabeth II, issued on 7 July 1971 as part of the decimal-currency set.[1]

The illustrated example is the stamp on the collection’s Post Office first day cover, bearing part of the pictorial Douglas cancellation dated 7 July 1971.

The catalogue credits the design to J Matthews. The accompanying Post Office information card gives his full name as Jeffery Matthews.[2] The portrait is after a plaster cast by Arnold Machin. Harrison and Sons printed the issue by photogravure on chalk-surfaced paper. Perforation is 15 × 14, and sheets contain 200 stamps (10 × 20).[1]

The stamp has two phosphor bands. It was originally issued on cream paper. A later version on white fluorescent paper is also recorded, without a separate date in the supplied entry. The catalogue lists printing cylinder 1 and phosphor cylinder 4, with dot and no-dot forms.[1]

The catalogue records invalidation of SG 8–11 for use in the Isle of Man from 5 July 1973, with transitional acceptance for the prepayment of postage on letters from the island until 5 August 1973. It separately records withdrawal from local sale on 7 July 1973 and from British Philatelic Counters on 4 July 1974. The regional stamps remained valid for use in the rest of the United Kingdom at that time.[1]
