IM-SG-39 is the 3p stamp from the Isle of Man's Golden Jubilee of Manx Grand Prix issue, released on 4 September 1973. The catalogue identifies its subject as Leonard Randles, first winner, 1923.[1]

The stamp bears the inscription “Leslie Randles First Winner 1923”, whereas Stanley Gibbons uses Leonard Randles in both the illustration caption and the main listing. The stamp and catalogue therefore differ in the rider’s given name.[1]

Subject

The stamp commemorates the first winner of the event that became the Manx Grand Prix. Randles won the inaugural 1923 race riding a Sunbeam motorcycle. An Auto-Cycle Union account identifies him as Len Randles.[2]

Production details

The stamp was designed by J. Nicholson and printed by John Waddington using lithography. It is multicoloured, with perforation 14.[1]

Sheets contained 50 stamps, arranged in two panes of 5 × 5. The plate numbers are 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D (each × 4). The imprint is centrally positioned in the bottom margin.[1]

Sales and withdrawal

The catalogue records 550,347 sold for this 3p stamp. It was withdrawn from sale on 3 September 1974.[1]

First day cover

A first day cover is listed for the issue.[1] See Isle of Man – Golden Jubilee of Manx Grand Prix – 1973 for the associated cover record.
