SG 18a is the 3½p Port St Mary definitive with a grey-brown border. It is a separately catalogued colour error.[1]

The error border resembles that of the 2p Laxey stamp, SG 15. The catalogue also records intermediate shades, but excludes those from its error listings.[1]

The relevant printing is (d), dated 29 July 1974. This is the printing date recorded by the catalogue; no separate first day of sale is given for the error. It belongs to a later printing than the stamps originally available for the 5 July 1973 first day cover.[1]

The design is credited to J. Nicholson. Courvoisier printed the stamp by photogravure in multiple colours on granite paper without a watermark. Perforation is 11½, and sheets contain 50 stamps (5 × 10).[1]

Catalogue printing

The catalogue records the following printing.[1]

Catalogue printing Date Gum Inscribed year

Withdrawal

The catalogue records general withdrawal of the issue on 31 December 1978. The 3½p value in booklets remained on sale until 15 May 1979. The 3½p value was retained for use on postal orders until its final withdrawal on 31 December 1985. Those later arrangements concern the denomination; the catalogue does not establish continued availability of this error in booklets or for postal orders. These are withdrawal-from-sale dates; the cited entry does not give a date of postal invalidation.[1]
