SG 2a is the 3d deep lilac Isle of Man regional definitive depicting Queen Elizabeth II, issued on 17 May 1963. Its distinguishing feature is chalk-surfaced paper.[1]

The design is credited to John Hobson Nicholson and the portrait to Dorothy Wilding Ltd.. Harrison and Sons printed the stamps by photogravure. Perforation is 15 × 14, and the sheet format is 240 stamps (12 × 20). The watermark is cross-referenced in the catalogue to the Guernsey type 1b illustration.[1]

The catalogue identifies 17 May 1963 as the date of issue in Douglas and states that release in London followed later. It records 1,080,000 stamps sold on chalk-surfaced paper, included within the combined ordinary 3d sales total.[1]

These regional stamps were initially valid for postage throughout the United Kingdom. Stanley Gibbons records the invalidation of Isle of Man SG 1–7 from 1 March 1972, alongside other British pre-decimal stamps.[1]
