IM-SG-MS58 is the four-stamp miniature sheet from the Isle of Man’s Birth Centenary of Sir Winston Churchill issue, released on 22 November 1974.[1]

Contents and inscription

  • 3½p — Churchill and Bugler Dunne at Colenso, 1899
  • 4½p — Churchill and Government Buildings, Douglas
  • 8p — Churchill and a Manx anti-aircraft gun crew
  • 20p — Churchill as Freeman of Douglas

The denominations total 36p, also printed as the sheet’s selling price. The sheet bears “30th NOV. 1974”; its issue date was 22 November 1974.[1]

Design and production

The information leaflet accompanying the owned official miniature sheet cover credits G. V. H. Kneale as designer and Helio Courvoisier as printer, using photogravure. It gives the whole miniature sheet size as 120.5 × 91 mm and specifies seven colours. The paper is white with coloured silk fibres, with special gumming for tropical climates and a weight of 120 g/m².[2]

Stanley Gibbons gives dimensions of 121 × 91 mm and perforation 11½ for the stamps.[1] The two sources’ dimensions are retained separately.

The catalogue’s sheet format of 25 stamps in a 5 × 5 arrangement describes the separately issued stamps. MS58 contains one of each of the four denominations.[1]

Illustrated example

The illustration shows the cancelled miniature sheet attached to the owned official cover. The close-up omits the upper margin bearing “SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL”, which is visible in the full cover scan.[3]

Sales and withdrawal

The catalogue records 362,089 miniature sheets sold. The miniature sheet was withdrawn from sale on 21 November 1975.[1]
