This owned Philart first day cover bears the 4d bright vermillion Isle of Man regional definitive, IM-SG-6, issued on 26 February 1969.[1]
The red and turquoise cachet shows the Three Legs of Man in a shield above Castle Rushen and the harbour at Castletown. It bears “ISLE OF MAN”, “REGIONAL DEFINITIVES 1969” and “FIRST DAY COVER” lettering, with the Philart logo below.[2]
The cover is addressed to Philart at its London business premises. A Douglas machine cancellation dated 26 February 1969 has a circular date stamp and a wavy-line obliterator across the stamp. The cancellation date matches the stamp’s recorded issue date.[2]
The supplied catalogue entry does not explicitly list a first day cover for SG 6. The cover’s appearance and cancellation are documented from the owned specimen.
No printed information leaflet is present in this copy. Whether one was originally supplied has not been established.
The stamp depicts Queen Elizabeth II. Its design is credited to John Hobson Nicholson, with the portrait credited to Dorothy Wilding Ltd.. It was printed by Harrison and Sons using photogravure, on chalk-surfaced paper, perforated 15 × 14 and issued in sheets of 240 (12 × 20). The catalogue records one centre phosphor band and cylinder number 1.[1]
The 4d denomination was withdrawn from sale locally on 14 March 1971 and at British Philatelic Counters on 25 November 1971. The stamp ceased to be valid for postage on 1 March 1972, under the catalogue’s invalidation statement for Isle of Man SG 1–7.[1]
